Step into the spotlight and sing your heart out in our annual SMASH! Karaoke Competition. Want to showcase your talent on the next level? Always dreamed of performing on stage like Love Live? Who knows, you might even be scouted to be a star!

Karaoke Competition rules

  • Only Japanese songs are available
  • Songs must be 6 minutes in length or under. Songs over this time limit will be cut at six minutes.
  • Please refrain from choosing songs with profanities as SMASH! is an all ages event.

Registration

Registration for the Karaoke Competition will be accepted online. Contestants are to provide a video of their performance, it will then be judged by our team of judges.

12 contestants will be selected from the online registration for the auditions for the finals. The audition will run on both Saturday and Sunday, 6 contestants each day.

The selected contestants will receive a free weekend pass to SMASH!

Online applications close on June 30th

Before the Audition

Contestants will be sent a text reminder from the Karaoke Staff 30 minutes before the Auditions are due to begin. Contestants must arrive and check in with staff 15 minutes before the Karaoke Competition Audition is due to start. Saturday Auditions 1PM-2PM/ Sunday Auditions 11AM-12PM.

The Audition

Contestants are allowed to use a printed lyrics sheet during their audition, however this may negatively affect their performance and overall score.

Performances will be judged by our team of judges using the following criteria:

  • Musicality: Difficulty of the song, Vocal Clarity, Timing, Pitch, Tone and expression.
  • Stage Presence: Presentation, Audience’s engagement
  • Judges Impression.

The judges will not provide any feedback after the Auditions, however the contestants are free to ask for feedback from the judges later.

After the Audition

Six contestants with the highest score across Saturday and Sunday auditions will be contacted to participate in the Karaoke Competition Finals. Only successful contestants will be contacted via text message on Sunday at 1PM. Contestants must confirm their availability to perform on Sunday on the Main Stage.

Before the Finals

When contacted by Karaoke staff, finalists will be asked to confirm the song they wish to perform in the finals. Should the song be different from the songs they provided on the registration from, the contestants will then be ask to provide another OFF-VOCAL track.

Please note that there will be no karaoke machine on the Main Stage. It is therefore strongly advised that finalists memorise the lyrics of their chosen song. Finalists may use a printed lyric sheet during the finals, however this may negatively affect their performance and overall score.

The Finals

Finalists must arrive at the Main Stage and check in with staff 15 minutes before the Karaoke Competition Final which will be on at 3:30PM at the main stage.

The final scoring for each performance will be based on an average combined score from a panel of judges. In the case of a tie, contestant’s audition score will be factored in.

After the Finals

Announcement of the winners will be during the Awards Ceremony on the Main Stage at 5:00PM

The following awards will be given: First Place, Second Place, and Third Place. Additional prizes may be awarded depending on scores and/or availability of prizes.
